A Brief History of Saturn

Saturn was a short lived marque brand of GM. It was founded in 1985 and was discontinued by GM in 2009, joining Oldsmobile and Pontiac who suffered the same fate.

The oil crisis of the 1970’s hit GM hard, and Asian and European imports with better gas mileage started eating up GM’s sales. In an effort to produce smaller cars that could compete with the imports, GM introduced the Saturn brand in 1985. The first Saturn vehicles produced were the Saturn SC and Saturn SL. In 2002, Saturn introduced its first SUV, the Vue. GM had extremely high hopes for the Saturn brand, but even though it was generally successful it did not meet those expectations. Saturn still wasn’t able to compete with the Asian automakers, as they had also built factories in the U.S.

Starting around 2003, after several years of dwindling sales, GM announced that it was planning on either selling or discontinuing the Saturn brand. In order to be considered for federal loans, GM shut down Saturn in 2009 as a part of the company’s restructuring.
