Car Air Conditioning Repairs

Some Of The Automotive Maintenance, Repairs & Services We Offer

At K & M Auto Services we are very experienced at air conditioning repairs in Portland. We will inspect the compressor and drive the belt for signs of damage. We will also inspect the whole system and check for leaks or cracks where refrigerant might be escaping. If you don’t have enough refrigerant, we can completely recharge you’re A/C for you and fill it with brand new refrigerant. Basically, if there is any problem with any part of your air conditioning system, we can go in and fix it.

You may not think about it that often, but your car’s air conditioning system is actually quite important. Not only does your air conditioner keep you cool on blistering hot summer days, but it can also remove humidity in your passenger compartment that fogs up the inside of your windows and windshield. If not for your air conditioner, you would have to wait for a much longer for the condensation on your windows to disappear.

Every automotive air conditioner comes with three main parts: a compressor, a condenser, and an evaporator. The compressor is a pump that is powered by a belt that attaches to the engine’s crankshaft. The compressor pumps refrigerant into the condenser. In the condenser, the refrigerant is cooled down with airflow until it turns back into its liquid form. The liquid refrigerant is then piped through the receiver-dryer and expansion valve on its way to the evaporator.

The liquid refrigerant is cold when it enters the evaporator. It has a very low boiling point, so the temperature in the passenger compartment of your car will actually cause the refrigerant to boil and turn into a gas again. The gaseous refrigerant flows into the passenger compartment and absorbs heat, while a fan blows cool air in from the evaporator. Eventually, the refrigerant re-enters the compressor, gets re-pressurized and the whole cycle starts over again.

While you’re there, let us perform a Touch® Courtesy Check, which includes a visual check of the following items:

  • Engine air filter
  • Brake fluid
  • Power steering fluid
  • Automatic transmission fluid
  • Coolant/antifreeze
  • We’ll also walk you through your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations for replacing these vital fluids and filters.
