High-Quality Car Alternator Repair in Portland, OR

Some Of The Automotive Maintenance, Repairs & Services We Offer

The alternator is a part of your vehicle’s automotive charging system. The alternator is driven by a small belt that attaches to your engine’s crankshaft. The alternator harnesses the energy from your engine to create an alternating current, which provides the voltage your car battery needs to start your car. In other words, your alternator is responsible for transforming the energy produced by your engine into electricity that in turn powers all of the electrical components in your vehicle, such as the headlights or the air conditioner.

Alternators have a lot of small, moving parts and therefore will break down over time. If you see a light come on in your dash that looks like a battery or says “ALT” next to it, then it probably means your alternator is struggling. Another indicator that your alternator may be malfunctioning is if your headlights or other electrical components dim or fade while you are driving. This usually means that your alternator is no longer functioning properly and is no longer able to generate enough electricity to power your vehicle’s headlights and other electrical components. If you hear a loud “growling” sound coming from your engine, it could be a sign that the bearings in your alternator need to be replaced. These bearings break down over time and eventually will cause your alternator to slow down or seize up.

With a K & M Auto Service oil change, or any other service, you’ll receive a Touch® Courtesy Check. We’ll look inside, outside, under the hood and underneath the car, then explain the findings and give you a written report. While you’re there, let us perform a Touch® Courtesy Check, which includes a visual check of the following items:

  • Engine air filter
  • Brake fluid
  • Power steering fluid
  • Automatic transmission fluid
  • Coolant/antifreeze
  • We’ll also walk you through your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations for replacing these vital fluids and filters.
