A Brief History of Kia
Kia was founded in 1944 as a bicycle and industrial product manufacturer. Starting in 1957 the company began making motorcycles, and by 1974 Kia was making cars and trucks as well. The Korean War greatly hindered Kia’s development, and the company had to rebuild itself afterward.
It wasn’t until 1992 that Kia finally began importing its cars to the U.S. The first Kia vehicles sold in the U.S. were sold at four dealerships in Portland, Oregon in 1994. Kia steadily expanded its U.S. business, and in 1995 there were more than 100 Kia dealerships in 30 states selling more than 24,000 vehicles. The Asian financial crisis forced Kia to declare bankruptcy in 1997. In 1998, Hyundai bailed out Kia and bought about half of its shares.
Kia recovered with the help of Hyundai, and in 2006 Kia began construction on a manufacturing plant in Georgia. The plant opened in 2010, at a time when Kia had posted rising U.S. sales for 15 consecutive years.
