A Brief History of Toyota
Toyota first ventured into automobile manufacturing way back in 1933. A year after it was founded, Toyota produced its first engine. Now Toyota is the world’s 12th biggest company based on revenue, and the third largest automaker.
During WWII, Toyota made trucks for the Japanese military. After the war, the company focused on making trucks and buses as the demand for passenger cars just wasn’t there yet. After Toyota had produced a few models for passenger vehicles, they decided to test the international market. In 1957, Toyota began importing vehicles to the U.S., but with mixed results. By the early 1970’s, however, the gas crisis would force Americans to buy smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles, and Toyota was there to meet the demand. The Corolla soon became the best-selling compact car in America.
Toyota exploded in popularity between the 1970’s and now. The Prius is the best-selling hybrid in the world, and Toyota plans to continue developing hybrid and electric vehicles.
