A Brief History of Cadillac
Cadillac was founded in 1902 by Henry Leland, who named the company after the founder of Detroit. It is the second oldest automaker in the U.S., and is also owned by General Motors.
Cadillac had a focus on precision engineering and luxury from the very beginning. The cars that Cadillac produced before WWII were aimed at the upper class, wealthy consumers, and that market took a huge hit during the Great Depression. Cadillac weathered the storm nicely, however, and by 1940 the company had recovered from the economic downturn.
After WWII, Cadillac wasted no time in pumping out new models. By 1949, Cadillac had produced its one millionth car, and annual production was up over 100,000 units. In the 50’s and early 60’s, Cadillac pioneered the “tailfin” look that swept the U.S. automaker industry. In 1967 Cadillac rolled out the Eldorado, which achieved great success.
Cadillac continued developing new technologies and adding it to its vehicles, such as radios, driver air bags, and climate control systems. Cadillac’s design philosophy for the 21st century is “art and science,” and its new models all reflect this philosophy.
