A Brief History of Mitsubishi

Part of the massive Mitsubishi business conglomerate, Mitsubishi is a multinational Japanese automaker. Mitsubishi Motors can trace its auto manufacturing history back to 1917.

In 1927, the company introduced the Mitsubishi Model A. It was an entirely hand-built sedan, but it couldn’t compete with the mass-produced American and European counterparts and was scrapped after only 22 had been made. The outbreak of WWII halted Mitsubishi’s commercial vehicle production for about 15 years.

By the early 1960’s the standard of living in Japan improved enough to where many families were able to afford vehicles. Mitsubishi capitalized on this demand by making the Mitsubishi 500, a mass market sedan. In 1971, Mitsubishi made a deal with Chrysler to import its vehicles to America. As a result, Dodge sold the Mitsubishi Galant as the Dodge Colt in U.S. dealerships. By 1982, the Mitsubishi brand was finally introduced in the U.S. with the Tredia sedan and the Cordia and Starion coupes.

Mitsubishi recently announced that it is aiming to create a number of new hybrid models and battery-powered vehicles by the year 2015. These new models could launch Mitsubishi into the mainstream.
