A Brief History of Mercury

Mercury was founded in 1937 as the luxury-brand offshoot of Ford. It was intended to fill the price gap between Ford’s main line of vehicles and its other marque brand, Lincoln.

The first Mercury vehicle produced was the Mercury Eight in 1939. The vehicle was very successful and sales were strong right up until the outbreak of WWII. In the 1950’s, Mercury found success in lowering and stretching out Ford models. In 1967, Mercury unveiled the Cougar, which was closely related to the Ford Mustang only it had a more European style. In 1971 Mercury produced the Capri, which was manufactured by Ford Europe and quickly became one of the top selling imported cars in America.

The 80’s and 90’s were tough on most automakers, and Mercury was no exception. The company struggled with downsizing its vehicles and its designs grew stagnant. In 2010, Ford discontinued Mercury, and made a statement that Lincoln would offer more vehicle models to make up for the end of the Mercury brand.
