Every automotive air conditioner comes with three main parts: a compressor, a condenser and an evaporator. The compressor is a pump that is powered by a belt which attaches to engine’s crankshaft. The compressor pumps refrigerant into the condenser. In the condenser, the refrigerant is cooled down with airflow until it turns back into its liquid form. The liquid refrigerant is then piped through the receiver-dryer and expansion valve on its way to the evaporator. The liquid refrigerant is cold when it enters the evaporator. It has a very low boiling point, so the temperature in the passenger compartment of your car will actually cause the refrigerant to boil and turn into a gas again. The gaseous refrigerant flows into the passenger compartment and absorbs heat, while a fan blows cool air in from the evaporator. Eventually the refrigerant re-enters the compressor, gets re-pressurized and the whole cycle starts over again.
