A Brief History of Oldsmobile

Oldsmobile was originally founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897, and was the first high-volume automobile manufacturer. The Oldsmobile Curved Dash was the first car ever mass-produced on an automotive assembly line. General Motors discontinued the Oldsmobile brand in 2004.

Oldsmobile started off with a bang, quickly becoming America’s best-selling car brand. When WWII rolled around, Oldsmobile produced military equipment. After the war, in 1949, Oldsmobile came up with the Rocket V8 engine, which was far more powerful than any engine at the time. In the 50’s and 60’s, Oldsmobile designed its vehicles to fit the “Rocket” theme. Oldsmobile produced several models that achieved varying success, such as the Cutlass, which was its best-selling car in the 60’s and 70’s.

After experiencing success in the early 1980’s, Oldsmobile started to tank. In the 1990’s GM used Oldsmobile to test new vehicle models, and by 2000 the company was no longer profitable. GM phased out the brand over the course of several years, and officially stopped production of new Oldsmobile vehicles in 2004.
