However, before you jump to the conclusion that your transmission needs to be fixed, check your transmission fluid level. A bad transmission and one that is low on fluid can often exhibit the same symptoms and warning signs. To check your fluid level, you must first locate your transmission dipstick. In a rear-wheel drive vehicle, it is located to the rear of the engine. In a front-wheel drive vehicle it is located near the front, usually sticking out of the transaxle. Put your car in park or neutral with the engine running and the parking brake engaged. Once the engine is warm, pull out the transmission dip stick and rub the fluid on it between your thumb and index finger. If it smells burnt or has a lot of particles floating in it, then you should have a mechanic perform a complete transmission flush. Clean the dip stick with a rag and reinsert it to check how much transmission fluid is present. There is a “full” line on your dip stick that tells you exactly how much fluid you need. If it isn’t full, use a funnel to precisely fill it to the line. Before you do this, you should read your owner’s manual to see exactly what type of fluid your vehicle requires.
