Transmission 101

Transmission 101

To be fair, the average driver doesn’t really have a clue what’s going on under the hood of their car, and that’s not always a good thing. In order to get the most out of your vehicle, you need to know what keeps it going (unfortunately it’s not just the engine). So, because knowledge is power, we wrote this blog post to teach you a little bit about one of your car’s most important components: the transmission.

What is the transmission?
It’s the gearbox that helps you change gears and converts speed and torques along the drive-train. Sounds complicated, sure- but in short, your transmission can greatly enhance or decrease your engine’s efficiency, depending on how well you take care of it.

What are the benefits of a smooth transmission?
Wouldn’t it be great if your car still drove as well as it did the day you bought it? Well, it can. A regularly maintained transmission extends the life of your vehicle because it optimizes fuel and engine efficiency, helping your car run like new for longer. Naturally, this makes for a better driving experience, and better driving experiences make for better drivers.

What happens if you drive with a faulty transmission?
One of the signs of a faulty transmission is a slipping or stalling when you change gears. Stalling on the road is obviously a very real danger, and can put your life and the lives of others on the road at risk. Also be alert for any unusual sounds or smells your vehicle makes when changing gears , as these could be early indicators that something is amiss. If you notice any of the aforementioned, please take your car in for a service as soon as possible. Continuing to drive a vehicle with a faulty transmission can also severely damage the engine which will lead to more costly repairs.

How can you take better care of your transmission?
While there is no magic formula for a perfectly running transmission, there are a few simple guidelines to follow to ensure the component’s longevity.

Transmission Maintenance Guide
1. Follow your manufacturers suggested service intervals. Routine maintenance is the key to a healthy transmission.
2. Warm up your car on cold mornings, as this puts less stress on the transmission and engine.
3. Check your ATF (automatic transmission fluid) regularly. Twice annually is recommended.
4. Always bring your vehicle to a complete stop before shifting gears, otherwise damage may occur. This is especially beneficial in extreme weather conditions like mud and snow.

Remember that things like transmission replacements, repairs or even fluid checks should always be performed by professionals, so if you’re in the greater Portland area and think your transmission needs some work, don’t hesitate to give our new transmission service center a call. We’ll show you just how great your car can be again.
